SPRI beads/Magnetic Beads FAQs

Do Magnetic Beads bind RNA?

Magnetic Beads selectively binding nucleic acids, including both RNA and DNA.

Is it OK to freeze Magnetic Beads?

Don’t Freeze Your Magnetic Beads. Beads should always be kept at 2 to 8ºC or room temperature according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Freezing and thawing may cause cracks on the surfaces of your beads and loss of magnetic ability and nucleic acids binding ability.

What is bead cleanup?

is the removal of unwanted components such as salts, dNTPs, enzymes, primers, adapters, and other impurities.

Can you spin down magnetic beads?

Do not to spin down magnetic beads at more than 2000 rpm, as this can change their binding properties and make them difficult to resuspend or bind to targets.

Can you reuse magnetic beads?

magnetic beads can only be reused when cross-sample contamination is not a concern.

Can you boil magnetic beads?

Boiling can cause bead aggregation and loss of binding activity.

Can you vortex magnetic beads?

Magnetic beads are massive particles comprised of iron oxide, so they sediment over time. It is crucial to vortex and thoroughly resuspend the magnetic beads before use to redisperse the beads.

How do you elute RNA from streptavidin beads?

Elute the RNA in water or Tris-HCl (10 mM, pH 7.5) at 80 °C for 2 min while shaking (1,000 rpm) in a mixer.

What are magnetic beads good for?

Magnetic beads are widely used for nucleic acids purification such as NGS, PCR, qPCR, ddPCR etc.

Can magnetic beads purify nucleic acids that are short than 100 bp?

Most of beads only work with DNA/RNA >100bp. There is a choice for DNA/RNA short than 100 bases: BioDynami beads for oligo/microRNA purification (as short as 20 bases) and BioDynami beads for tRNA purification (as short as 70 bases).

What is the difference between paramagnetic particles and magnetic particles?

Unlike ferromagnetic materials, paramagnetic particles do not retain magnetization if the external field has been removed. Overall, they have no magnetic memory.

What are SPRI beads made of?

SPRI beads are paramagnetic beads, made of polystyrene surrounded by a layer of magnetite with carboxyl coating.

What does SPRI beads stand for?

Solid Phase Reversible Immobilization.

How much DNA can magnetic beads bind?

1 ul of beads usually can bind over 3 ug of DNA.
